Libertarian purist or plain 'ol racist?

Funny thing about libertarianism. It sounds good to a lot of people, especially those who hate or distrust the government. Whatever their issue - deficit spending, entitlement programs, foreign wars - or all of the above, many Americans find this ideology appealing. And many of those on both the right and the left have been enthusiastic supporters of GOP Congressman Ron Paul, now the frontrunner in the first caucus state, Iowa, and a contender - though nobody thinks he has a good shot - at the Republican nomination. Lefties love his stance on war (stop waging wars, cut defense spending, don't be the policeman of the world) and righties generally love his domestic agenda (cut government to the bone). Others like what they call his refreshing consistency on issues and his unwillingness to pander (he's the real anti-Romney, apparently).
But there are some pesky issues that his followers do need to consider. The big one is his apparent racism. Now that's a loaded word. Like shouting fire in a crowded theater. But consider what's come out in the last few days, facts that have actually been public knowledge for a while. In the 90s, when Paul was practicing medicine between Congressional terms, Paul published newsletters in the 1980s and 1990s that featured racist, homophobic, and ant-Semitic content along with a raft of fringe conspiracy theories. He denies having either authored or read the most offensive content, but has not offered up an explanation as to who wrote the publication and how he hired them. His explanation has also changed somewhat since the newsletter issue was first raised in 1996t. Paul is saying he never wrote them, never looked at them, someone used his name, nothing to see here folks, so move on.
More revelations are coming out. Such as a new one yesterday, a signed direct mail piece in 1993 aimed at attracting subscribers to his newsletter by warning of a “coming race war” and a “federal-homosexual cover-up on AIDS. Paul disavows this one, too, and says he has no idea who put his name to it.
Poor Ron Paul. So many neo-Nazis, nativists, and Aryan Nation types who put his name on their propaganda. And who contributed to his campaign. Either they think he's one of them, or at least can promote their agenda, or they're all playing a prank on him to deny him the nomination. If it's the latter, he better get reputationdefender.com, stat.
It's all pretty ugly. There is a strain of hard-core libertarianism that says the Civil Rights Act of 1965, and indeed all government regulation designed to promote equality, or give non-white races a leg up, is unconstitutional and represent an offensive intrusion upon businesses. Their saying goes like this: "I'm against racism and I'm not a racist. BUT I believe that a business has the constitutional right to serve anyone it wants to and for the government to tell that business it can't, well that's an affront to the free market system and it's against the constitution." Or something like that. One can suppose it makes sense to people with an unbending libertarian ideology. But to the rest of us, especially people of color, it sounds like racism. This brings us to that loaded word again. It is one of the worst things a person can be called today. Many people think that unless they're actually burning crosses on lawns that they can't possibly be racist. "Some of my best friends are..." "I hate racism but I don't believe blacks should have special rights..." "I hate racists but quotas are unfair to whites..." Or, in poor Ron Paul's case, "I disavow racism, but I see a coming race war where the white Christians must fight for what's ours..." Well, sorry folks. That's racism. If you're willing to own the words, you should be willing to own the term racist.
Except poor Ron Paul isn't willing to own his own words anymore. Strange. We thought "personal responsibility" was crux of libertarianism. Maybe it's one of those things that sounds good, but just isn't applicable.
