DNC picks Latino politician to give convention keynote

Tired of the election, yet?
Maybe you'd like to cast your eyes upon 2016.
Last week the Democratic National Convention annouced that the mayor of San Antonio, Texas, Julian Castro, would be the keynote speaker at the 2012 Democratic convention. Why is this important? For one, the Democratic convention, in addition to nominating a presidential candidate, showcases up-and-coming politicians with aspirations for higher office. And their track record is pretty good.
The keynote speaker in the 2004 Democratic convention was Barack Obama, who then had not even won his Illinois U.S. Senate seat. And in 1988, Bill Clinton, a little-known politician outside of his home state of Arkansas, was given an important speech (not the keynote) that went on a bit too long.
Clearly, the DNC uses the forum to pick future winners and to highlight the direction of its party. This time the direction is clear: not only courting Latino voters, but boosting a key Latino politician. With this pick, Castro becomes the frontrunner for the 2016 nomination.
As the Washington Post says:
Democrats’ selection of Castro suggests the party is going to be making a full-court press to turn out Latino voters in November. Western swing states with substantial Hispanic populations like Nevada and Colorado could be crucial for the president in the fall.
In 2008, Obama took 67 percent of the Hispanic vote to just 31 percent for Arizona Sen. John McCain.
Castro is something of a rising star in Democratic politics. He’s young, telegenic and comes from humble roots (he was raised by a single mother and, like Obama, went on to receive a degree from Harvard Law School).
We should point out that the chairman of the convention is Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villariagosa, already one of the highest-profile Latinos in politics.
We have covered the growth of the Latino/Hispanic communities extensively. The Democrats, at least, understand that this demographic is key to winning future elections, and according to the New York Times, are trying to cement Latino loyalty to their party.
Republicans, play your hand.
