Brookings: U.S. "irrational" about immigration
Submitted by NAD on Thu, 09/02/2010 - 21:54According to the Brookings Institution, there are several myths that continue to cloud the debate about immigration. These are myths that are bandied about by the media, by politicians, and by the public who assume they are true. Unfortuanately they are skewing the debate into irrational fear and xenophobia. In short, the myths listed by Brookings are:
-Illegal immigrants don't pay taxes. They actually pay a variety of taxes, including income, Social Security and Medicare taxes, as well as sales taxes and property taxes.
-The United States rarely deports illegal immigrants. In fact, the government deports 350,000 people annually.
-Economics and business drive U.S. immigration policy. Two-thirds of the 1 million official visas awarded each year are based on family unification. Only 15% of visas each year are awarded for employment purposes.
-The United States makes a special effort to attract scientists, engineers and technological experts. In 2009 we set aside 65,000 of America's nearly 1 million visas each year for high-skilled workers, lower than U.S. allowed from 1999 to 2004.
-The courts treat immigrants fairly. In immigration court deportation proceedings, those who have a lawyer win their cases 46% of the time, compared with 16% for those without a lawyer.
-Americans oppose allowing illegal immigrants to stay in the United States and become citizens. Results from a Pew Research Center survey show that 63% favor a path to citizenship if illegal immigrants pass a background check, pay fines and have a job.
We could add other myths that need to be busted. Such as:
- Illegal immigration is rising. Nope. According to a new report issued by the Pew Hispanic Center, the annual number of illegal aliens entering the United States has dropped from 850,000 at the beginning for the decade to 300,000 at the end of the decade.
- Illegal immigrants are mostly drug mules. This should be obviously false, but the Governor of Arizona has been flogging this one, as well as the "headless bodies in the desert" lie for some time and refuses to recant these falsehoods. Why should she? She's twenty points ahead in the polls, due to her signing of the "papers please" law this spring.
Will these myths be busted in the near future? Don't count on it. It's two months until the election, and some candidates want to run on this issue. It's most often the ones who want to stoke fear and hatred of immigrants in order to coax voters to the ballot box. It's only going to get uglier and stupider in the short term. Unfortunately many of the politicians who are flinging around these lies are poised to benefit from them.
